A front door key that won’t turn is frustrating. A key that won’t turn and won’t come back out of the lock leaves you with a door you can’t properly use and a key you can’t take with you.
That was the situation we were called out to in September 2026 at a home in Bersham, Wrexham. Bersham is part of our locksmith service across Wrexham and the surrounding villages, and we arrived just ahead of the appointed time.
A key seized in the locked position
The customer’s composite front door was fitted with a standard euro cylinder, and the key had seized completely in the locked position. It wouldn’t turn, and it wouldn’t pull out.
The cause was a mechanical failure inside the cylinder itself: a slipped cam. The cam is the part of the cylinder that the key turns to operate the lock, and here it had slipped.
Getting the failed cylinder out without damage
To avoid damaging the composite door, we used non-destructive techniques: we bypassed the seized mechanism and extracted the failed cylinder without causing any damage to the door or to the customer’s gold Yale handles.
Why we fitted an anti-snap cylinder
With the old cylinder out, simply putting the same standard type back would have fixed the fault but left the door no more secure than before. Standard euro cylinders are the part of a door that lock-snapping targets, so we swapped the faulty barrel for a high-security anti-snap cylinder.
We then tested the door’s multipoint hooks and rollers to make sure everything was engaging smoothly, and took a moment to explain what the new lock does and why it protects against the snapping technique used on standard cylinders.
The job was finished quickly and exactly in line with the original quote.
If your key won’t turn or won’t come out
A key that sticks, stiffens or seizes in a euro cylinder is often a sign the cylinder itself is failing. If it happens to you:
- don’t force the key, as a snapped key makes the job harder
- don’t try to lever the door open
- call a locksmith who can remove the cylinder without damaging the door
If the cylinder needs replacing anyway, it’s the ideal time to change the lock to an anti-snap one.
